St George's Hall — a thousand years framed in oak

Of all the rooms you walk through at Windsor, St George's Hall is the one that stops people in the doorway. Fifty-five metres long, with a soaring oak hammerbeam roof rebuilt after the 1992 fire, the hall is the largest single room in the castle and the venue for state banquets when foreign heads of state are received by the monarch. Look up: the ceiling is studded with the painted shields of every Knight of the Garter since 1348 — the oldest order of chivalry in the world, founded by Edward III after his victory at Crécy.

The hall sits on the route through the State Apartments, alongside the Waterloo Chamber commemorating the 1815 victory over Napoleon, the gilded Crimson Drawing Room redesigned for George IV, and the Garter Throne Room where each June the new Knights of the Garter are invested before processing down to St George's Chapel. Together with Queen Mary's Dolls' House — a perfect 1:12 working palace built between 1921 and 1924 with running water and electric light — the route is one of the great walks in any royal residence in Europe.

How much are Windsor Castle tickets?
Advance prices for 2026 are £32 for adults, £21 for young people aged 18–24, £16 for children aged 5–17 and £16 for disabled visitors (with one access companion admitted free). Under 5s enter free. On-the-day prices are £4 higher across the board.
Do I need to book in advance?
Strongly recommended. Walk-up tickets are sold subject to availability but Windsor frequently sells out, especially on Saturdays from April to October and during school half-terms. See our best time to visit page for quieter slots.

How long should I plan for the visit?
Most visitors spend between 2.5 and 3.5 hours inside the castle precinct. Add an extra hour if you want to follow the multimedia guide in full, attend the Changing of the Guard or sit in on a Choral Evensong at St George's Chapel.
Which days is the castle open?
Thursday to Monday. Windsor Castle is closed every Tuesday and Wednesday, and St George's Chapel is closed to tourists on Sundays (when it is in use for worship — you're welcome to attend a service free of charge). See opening hours for full details.
Can I take photos inside?
No photography is allowed inside the State Apartments or St George's Chapel — including phone cameras and wearable devices. Photography is welcome anywhere outside in the precincts. The full list of restrictions is on our rules & regulations page.
Is the castle wheelchair accessible?
Largely — but with caveats. The route includes steep cobbled paths between the wards which are challenging for manual wheelchairs. Lifts serve the State Apartments. Are children free?

Is the multimedia guide worth it?
It's included free with every ticket — so yes, always. The guide covers around 50 stops across the State Apartments, the Semi-State Rooms (in winter) and St George's Chapel, narrated by Royal Collection Trust curators in 8 languages. Bring earphones for the best experience.
Can I see the Changing of the Guard?
Yes — the Castle Guard changes on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 11:00 in the Lower Ward inside the castle (free with admission on Thurs/Sat — Tuesdays the castle is closed, view from outside). The new guard marches from Victoria Barracks on Sheet Street at about 10:45. Schedules can change without notice; always check before you travel.
