Windsor Castle Map
Windsor Castle is a historic castle that is more than 1000 years old. It was originally built in the 11th century by William the conqueror.
Though it has been enlarged, expanded, and several portions remodeled numerous times, it retains much of the original basic layout as a motte-and-bailey.
The castle is spread over an area of around 13 acres and is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world.
The present-day design and layout are the result of various redesigns incorporating Georgian and Victorian designs with Gothic features adapted to modern style and taste.
Windsor Castle is merely 22 miles away from another royal residence, i.e, Buckingham Palace.
Apart from the obvious commonalities, there are several differences between Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
To understand this complex and ornate piece of historic architectural marvel, Windsor Castle is divided into three Courtyards/Wards, namely, Upper, Middle, and Lower wards.
There are two quadrilateral-shaped building complexes that are separated by The Round Tower in the Middle Complex.
Each of these Wards consists of multiple structures and building complexes.
At the heart of Windsor castle lies the Middle Ward consisting of the Keep called the Round Tower based on an original 12th-century building.
This tower was later extended upwards in the 19th century by 30 feet and the interior was further redesigned for the Royal Archives.
The western entrance to the Middle Ward is also a gateway leading north onto the North Terrace.
The Eastern exit from the ward is guarded by the Norman Gatehouse, which is heavily vaulted and decorated with carvings.
The upper Ward of Windsor Castle includes the private apartments of the monarch and private apartments for visitors.
The State Apartments form the major portion of the Upper Ward including the Waterloo Chamber, St. George’s Hall, and the grand reception hall.
The royal library is also in the upper Ward that houses some priceless collections of drawings from famous painters such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Han Holbein, etc.
Not all parts of Windsor Castle are open to visitors throughout the year. For more details, you can read Windsor castle’s opening times.
The Lower Ward lies to the west of Round Tower and can be accessed through the Norman Gate.
Most of the Lower ward was reconstructed during the mid-Victorian period and consists of one of the major attractions of Windsor Castle, i.e, St. George’s Chapel.
St. George’s Chapel lies to the north of Lower Ward and is the spiritual home of the Order of the Knights of the Garter.
Within the Chapel, you will find the tomb of 10 great monarchs. On the east end of the Chapel is another chapel called Lady Chapel.
Windsor Castle is surrounded by extensive parkland. The immediate area stretching to the east of the castle is a 19th-century creation called the Home Park.
Windsor Castle map showcases the fascinating history and series of events it witnessed throughout its 1000 years which morphed the castle.
